    Lakeside Living

The weather is getting warmer and our minds turn to lazy summer days on the lake. We have some gorgeous mountain lakes in the area although you wouldn't be aware of them necessarily if you are just looking exclusively in Asheville. So here are some of the communities and small towns that you would want to take a look at if you are looking for a lake home that offers boating, hiking, fishing, and all of the recreational activities that you desire from waterfront living.

    Lake Lure

You may recognize this waterview from the hit movie, Dirty Dancing. While the plot was set in The Poconos it was filmed right here in our charming town. Lake Lure is located 45 minutes east of Asheville on Hwy. 74.

Lake Lure is known for its stunning slickrock views, waterside restaurants, excellent hiking, fishing, and of course, boating. The town does have a sandy public beach with a waterslide and is a favorite place to relax.

Lake Lure has one resort property, Rumbling Bald Resort, which is a mix of condos and single family homes. The property is owned by Westin and has a golf course, fitness center, pool, spa, and restaurant. They allow short term rentals so it can be a great area to invest in a vacation rental. https://rumblingbald.com/

If you are looking for more of a primary residence or second home for yourself, you will want to look in the community of Riverbend https://riverbendlakelurepoa.com/
This community is a bit more laid back but also allows short term rentals and can be a bit more affordable.

There are, of course, numerous single family homes available for sale but keep in mind that those that are waterfront sell at a premium and go quickly. Many come with docks and boathouses.

    342 W Lake Dr. N, Listed for $1,600,000

    Lake James

Lake James is located in the town of Nebo, NC near Marion. This little town has seen a lot of growth in the past few years and part of its allure is the easy access to I-40 and routes to Raleigh and Charlotte. Lake James is also about 45 minutes to Asheville.

Lake James also has a beautiful state park with purpose built mountain bike trails, hiking, fishing, a beach, picnic pavilion, and gorgeous views. Lake James also has some of the clearest water that I have ever seen.

I also like this lake for its amenities that you can access boatside. They have drive up marinas with restaurants, bars, and outdoor entertainment that are a fun place to catch a bite and take a break from the water.

Where Lake James used to be a bit obscure it has now been discovered by out of towners. An explosion of luxury home communities has popped up within the past few years such as The Old Wildlife Club. These homes are on large lots with a wilderness feel and beautiful lakefront. They are constructed in a more rustic style with a lot of timber beams and soaring ceilings. Homes in Old Wildlife Club sell for anywhere from $2.5-10M.

Other communities like The Arbor at Lake James have lakefront homes like this mid century cabin.

This home at 536 Harborside Dr. is currently available for $1,325,000.

But if you are not so concerned with direct lake access but would like to be either across the street or yard from the lake, check out Holiday Shores, a lovely community with more affordably priced homes around $600,000.

    Lake Toxaway

For a more remote mountain lake experience travel to Lake Toxaway near Rosman, NC. This lake is set high in the mountains near Sapphire, NC. It is about 50 minutes to 1 hour away from Asheville. https://laketoxaway.com/

Lake Toxaway is not dam controlled so it maintains a constant water level all year round unlike some of the other lakes that are drained in the wintertime. This lake has a more quiet feel due to its remoteness.

The nearby town of Sapphire has a beautiful championship golf course, great restaurants, art galleries, and is a premiere tourist destination for outdoor activities. You can also drive into nearby Brevard and enjoy some music or an adventure through the Pisgah National Forest.

The premier community of Lake Toxaway Estates has homes of all styles and sizes. Truly charming with a old-time mountain lake feel.

Homes in this community sell for between $1-6M.

But you can also find some lovely rustic cabins that are lakefront for a great price. This home at 181 Hiwassee Rd. is currently available for $749,000.

These are the closest recreational lake communities to the Asheville area. Asheville itself does not have any large lakes within Buncombe county that can be used for boating. However, we do have Beaver Lake which is a part of the Lakeview Park community in N. Asheville but it can't only be used for non-motorized water sports such as paddleboarding and canoeing and by permit only.

For more information on these and any other waterfront homes or communities in the area, please give me a call! Summer is coming!
