Four wheel drive, sports car, or anything in between? What do I drive in WNC?
You think mountains and you automatically go to piles of snow, icicles, and hibernation...but not in Asheville! That is one of the benefits of living in the southern Appalachians. Though we do have curvy, windy roads the weather here is quite nice year round. So what do you need to drive in order to be where you need to at any time of the year?
While four wheel drive is nice, it is not a necessity. My lovely husband bought me this Jeep yesterday but it was mainly because my Hyundai was on its last legs, lol! I also drive up some fairly rugged roads at times and the extra traction is beneficial for steepness, not necessarily weather.
Your first determination should be where do you drive normally and what are your normal commuter routes. If you are driving in the city for the most part, you can be comfortable and safe in pretty much anything; from a Maserati to a Datsun. If you are looking to live on a ridgetop, then you might want to consider four wheel drive, especially if you will be driving frequently on gravel.
My main point is that you do not need a special vehicle in order to navigate successfully around WNC. We are unique in that we have all of the beauty without the cold weather headaches...
This makes us one of the most desirable areas in the country!
